The table shows a 150 ft fence in one straight run with one 4 ft walk gate and 8 ft wide panels.
| Vinyl fence | Height | DIY total | DIY per ft | Installed total | Installed per ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

White vinyl is usually the cheapest color. Tan, gray and wood grain finishes often cost more. Enter your local panel price in the calculator.
Vinyl vs wood fence cost
Vinyl costs more up front. For the same 150 ft, 6 ft privacy fence with one gate, our estimate is about $2,640 in materials for side-by-side wood pickets and about $4,270 for vinyl. That is roughly $1,630 more for vinyl.
The difference is upkeep. Wood needs stain or sealer every few years and boards rot or warp over time. Vinyl only needs washing. To decide, compare the extra cost of vinyl with what you expect to spend on staining and repairs over the years you plan to stay. Use the privacy fence calculator to compare wood and vinyl side by side with your own prices.
How the vinyl fence calculator works
- Panels: vinyl fences are built from panels, so the post spacing equals the panel width. The fence length on each side is divided by the panel width and rounded up.
- Posts: one post per panel, plus one to finish each open run and one extra for each gate. Corner posts are shared.
- Caps: one cap per post.
- Concrete: a 10 in round hole, 2 ft deep, around a 5x5 post takes about 2 bags of 50 lb fast-setting concrete.
- Panel width: panels are priced for 8 ft wide. If you choose 6 ft panels in the advanced settings, the panel price is scaled to the width. You can still type in the real price.
Example: a straight 100 ft, 6 ft vinyl privacy fence with 8 ft panels needs 13 panels, 14 posts, 14 caps and about 28 bags of concrete. Materials cost about $2,710 at our default prices.
6 ft or 8 ft wide panels?
Most vinyl privacy panels are 6 ft tall and either 6 ft or 8 ft wide. Wider panels mean fewer posts, so they are usually cheaper per foot. For a 150 ft fence, switching from 8 ft to 6 ft panels raises our estimate from about $4,270 to $4,650, mostly because of the extra posts and concrete. Narrow panels can make sense in windy areas or on uneven ground.
Tips for building a vinyl fence
- Set posts carefully. Vinyl panels slide into routed posts, so the spacing must be exact. Install a panel as you set each post, or cut a spacer to the exact width.
- Reinforce gate posts. Gates pull hard on their posts. Many installers add an aluminum insert or fill gate posts with concrete.
- Plan for slopes. Vinyl privacy panels are harder to fit on a slope than wood. On sloped ground, panels are usually stepped down, which needs longer posts.
- Mind the wind. Solid privacy panels catch wind like a sail. In windy areas, set posts deeper and consider narrower panels.
- Check the rules. Many towns limit backyard fences to 6 ft and front yards to 3 or 4 ft. Check your local code and HOA, and call 811 before you dig.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a vinyl fence cost per foot?
Using the calculator's default prices, a 6 ft vinyl privacy fence costs about $28.50 per foot in materials and about $40.50 per foot installed. A 4 ft vinyl picket fence costs about $20 per foot in materials and about $30 per foot installed.
Is vinyl fence cheaper than wood?
Not up front. In our 150 ft example, a 6 ft vinyl privacy fence costs about $1,630 more in materials than side-by-side wood pickets. Vinyl can catch up over time because it does not need stain or sealer and does not rot.
How many posts do I need for a vinyl fence?
One post per panel, plus one to finish each open run and one for each gate. With 8 ft panels, a straight 100 ft fence needs 13 panels and 14 posts.
How much concrete does a vinyl fence post need?
About 2 bags of 50 lb fast-setting concrete for a 5x5 post in a 10 in hole set 2 ft deep. Gate posts are often filled with concrete as well, which takes more.
Should I buy 6 ft or 8 ft wide vinyl panels?
8 ft panels are usually cheaper per foot because you need fewer posts. 6 ft panels are stiffer and can work better in windy areas or on uneven ground.
How long does a vinyl fence last?
A well installed vinyl fence can last for decades with little upkeep. Many vinyl fence products come with long warranties, often 20 years or more. Check the warranty terms for the product you buy.
